The Presidency has responded to Bishop Kukah’s claims, asserting that President Tinubu is a reformer, not an accidental leader. Bayo Onanuga emphasized that Tinubu was well-prepared for the presidency and is enacting significant reforms in sectors like taxation and oil, despite the challenges and time required.
The Presidency has strongly rejected the claim by Bishop Matthew Kukah that President Bola Tinubu is an “accidental leader.” In response to Kukah’s comments, the Presidency described Tinubu as a well-prepared leader who is committed to reforming Nigeria.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, emphasized that Tinubu had prepared himself for the role and is actively working to bring about significant change. Onanuga argued that the President is focused on reforming key areas such as taxation, the oil sector, and governance and that these changes require time to be fully realized.
The Presidency’s statement came after Kukah’s assertion that many of Nigeria’s leaders, including Tinubu and his predecessor Muhammadu Buhari, had not adequately prepared for leadership. Kukah had labeled them as products of “accidental leadership,” citing the turbulent nature of Nigeria’s political history.
Onanuga refuted the idea that Tinubu’s reforms were a sign of struggle, asserting that reforms, while challenging, take time and are necessary for the country’s progress. He further clarified that Tinubu has acknowledged the potential impact of these changes on citizens and is committed to ensuring that those affected are supported throughout the process.
