In a stakeholder meeting held at the Bank of Industry headquarters in Abuja, Toyin Subaru, the Special Assistant to the President on Special Duties and Domestic Affairs, announced a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionize the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Nigeria. This initiative aims to make CNG more accessible and affordable to Nigerians, with a target price of N230 per kilogram, significantly undercutting the cost of petrol.
Subaru unveiled plans for the deployment of 11,500 gas-powered buses across the country starting next week, as part of broader efforts to address transportation challenges. This move is expected to reduce transportation costs by up to two-thirds and promote CNG as a cleaner alternative to petrol.
The plan involves establishing CNG distribution stations across the country, and an app will be developed to help users locate the nearest CNG station. The initiative is aimed at helping Nigerians save on transportation expenses, with CNG offering a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly option.
The government also intends to have one million CNG vehicles on Nigerian roads by 2027, a move that aligns with President Buhari's goal to promote sustainable energy sources and reduce reliance on petrol. The Presidential CNG Initiative, headed by Programme Director Micheal Oluwagbemi, is expected to create over 50,000 jobs and mitigate the effects of subsidy removal. With ongoing partnerships and investments, the initiative aims to roll out 55,000 CNG conversion kits within the specified timeframe, setting the stage for a CNG revolution in Nigeria
