President Bola Tinubu has postponed this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting in honor of the late Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria's former Chief of Army Staff. Lagbaja passed away on November 5, 2024. Flags nationwide will be flown at half-staff for seven days in his honor.
President Bola Tinubu has announced the postponement of this week’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting following the death of Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria's former Chief of Army Staff (COAS). The decision came after Lagbaja’s passing on November 5, 2024, in Lagos due to an undisclosed illness.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu instructed that the meeting, originally scheduled for today, be rescheduled to a later date, which will be announced soon. The president’s office also confirmed that as a mark of respect, flags across the nation will be flown at half-staff for the next seven days in honor of the late army chief.
"General Taoreed Lagbaja, who served as Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, until his death, was a man of great service to Nigeria," the statement read. "In light of his passing, President Tinubu expressed deep condolences to the Lagbaja family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the entire nation."
Tinubu further praised the late general's contributions to national security and peace, extending wishes for his eternal rest. This moment of national mourning is set to resonate across Nigeria, as General Lagbaja’s death marks a significant loss for both the military and the country at large.
