Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria's late Chief of Army Staff, was buried in Abuja after two days of tributes and funeral rites. President Tinubu and top officials honored his service, with Tinubu posthumously awarding him the CFR title and urging the military to remain resolute in combating insecurity.
The late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, was laid to rest on Friday at the National Cemetery in Abuja, concluding a distinguished military career. The solemn ceremony followed two days of funeral rites that began in Lagos. His casket, draped in Nigeria’s green and white, arrived at the cemetery in a white funeral wagon after a service at the National Christian Centre.
The burial, attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other high-ranking officials, was marked by tributes. President Tinubu honored the late COAS with a posthumous Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) award, emphasizing his pivotal contributions to national security. Tinubu also reassured the military of the nation’s unwavering support during this challenging time.
Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa urged the armed forces to remain resolute in their fight against insecurity, inspired by Lagbaja’s legacy. “Let his sacrifice guide us as we defend this nation,” he said.
The burial concluded with the lowering of the casket at 4:41 pm, amidst prayers and tears. Earlier events included a service of songs at Mogadishu Cantonment and the arrival of Lagbaja’s body at Abuja’s Presidential Wing.
