President Bola Tinubu welcomes the Super Eagles' safe return from Libya, demanding an investigation into their 13-hour ordeal at a Libyan airport before their AFCON qualifier. Tinubu praises the players' resilience and calls for accountability from the Confederation of African Football regarding the inhuman treatment they endured.
President Bola Tinubu expressed relief and satisfaction upon the safe return of Nigeria's Super Eagles after their distressing experience at a Libyan airport, where they were stranded for over 13 hours. The team was en route for their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier against Libya, originally scheduled for Tuesday.
Following widespread condemnation of the situation on social media, the players and officials returned home to Nigeria. In a statement, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga highlighted President Tinubu's outrage over the "inhuman treatment" faced by the Super Eagles. The President is demanding a thorough investigation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) into the incident.
He expects CAF's Disciplinary Board to address the "harrowing experience" endured by the team and recommend appropriate actions against those responsible for violating CAF’s statutes and regulations. Tinubu commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development for their swift actions in facilitating the team's safe return.
Despite the ordeal, President Tinubu praised the players for maintaining their spirits during the difficult time in Libya. While the Libyan authorities have denied allegations of any sabotage, CAF has confirmed it will investigate the circumstances surrounding the Super Eagles’ ordeal and take necessary disciplinary measures against those found culpable.
