The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed 18 senior police officers and demoted 19 others for various misconducts, following a review of 109 disciplinary matters. The decision, made during a plenary meeting chaired by PSC Chairman Hashimu Argungu, also addressed 23 appeals and 13 court judgments. Among the dismissed officers were 10 Assistant Superintendents, six Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent. Additionally, the commission reduced the ranks of 19 officers, including Assistant Commissioners of Police and Superintendents.
Two Assistant Inspectors-General of Police received disciplinary actions, one was reprimanded for failing to carry out lawful instructions and the other was warned for negligence. Other officers faced varying punishments, including severe reprimands and warnings. The PSC indicated that officers dismissed would also be prosecuted by the Nigeria Police Force's legal unit.
The commission emphasized its commitment to handling disciplinary matters swiftly, ensuring that innocent officers can advance in their careers while those found guilty face appropriate consequences. Chairman Argungu also cautioned officers against involving themselves in civil matters such as land disputes and marital issues, urging the police force to focus on criminal activities and public safety.
