An Ekiti Magistrates’ Court has struck out the defamation suit against Dele Farotimi after legal icon Afe Babalola withdrew charges. The case, linked to Farotimi’s book allegations, was dismissed following police requests. Traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, played a key role in resolving the dispute.

An Ekiti State Magistrates’ Court has dismissed the defamation case against human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, following a police motion to withdraw the charges. The case stemmed from allegations that Farotimi defamed legal icon Afe Babalola in his book.

The decision follows Afe Babalola’s agreement to drop the charges after intervention from traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife. The prosecution confirmed the withdrawal request, and the court struck out the case. Farotimi’s lawyer welcomed the ruling, stating it was a relief from the “chains” imposed on his client.

The case had initially been filed in December 2024 and later adjourned before being dismissed on February 13, 2025.
