The Federal Government has ordered the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge on Victoria Island, Lagos after massive gridlock left commuters stranded for hours.
The bridge was initially closed on Monday for essential maintenance and rehabilitation works, as announced by Olukorede Kesha, the federal controller of works in Lagos. The closure was expected to last until the end of May, affecting traffic from Ahmadu Bello Way and Adeola Odeku towards Marina, Eko Bridge, and Onikan.
However, the prolonged congestion caused by the closure forced an urgent review of the decision. Many motorists were reportedly stuck for over four hours, prompting a public outcry. Responding to the situation, Minister of Works David Umahi directed that the bridge be reopened immediately to ease movement in the area.
In a statement issued by Kesha on Wednesday evening, Umahi explained that while the maintenance work was necessary, an alternative approach would be adopted to prevent excessive traffic disruptions. He assured the public that palliative repairs would be carried out to keep the bridge motorable until full rehabilitation is implemented at a later date.
The minister also apologized for the inconvenience caused by the initial closure and appealed for the understanding and cooperation of road users as the government works on long-term solutions to improve Lagos' road infrastructure.
With the bridge reopened, motorists can expect improved traffic flow, though authorities urge patience as repair plans continue.
