Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun announced a significant deployment of security personnel in Edo State ahead of the governorship election set for September 21. At a recent stakeholders meeting organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin, Egbetokun revealed that 35,000 officers from the Nigeria Police Force and 8,000 members from other security agencies would be on the ground to ensure a safe and secure electoral process.
The IGP reassured the residents of Edo that their safety would be a top priority, encouraging them to participate in the election without fear. He highlighted the suspension of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and clarified that neither private nor state security agencies would be permitted to operate during the election period.
Egbetokun emphasized the importance of enforcing a no-movement restriction from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day, a measure aimed at maintaining public order. He urged local security groups to avoid any involvement in election-related activities and reiterated that the police would take firm action against any acts of violence or thuggery.
