Nigeria faces a potential fuel scarcity crisis as the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) declares a halt to lifting petroleum products starting next week Monday.
The move is in response to the high cost of operations, primarily the soaring price of diesel needed to power trucks for product transportation. Diesel prices reportedly range between N1,250 to N1,400 per liter, contributing to operational losses for NARTO members.
Despite efforts to seek intervention from key stakeholders, including the government and industry operators, the association plans to suspend operations from Monday onwards.
NARTO's president, Yusuf Othman, cites unsustainable losses, emphasizing the need for a response to the escalating operational challenges faced by transporters.
The development raises concerns about the potential impact on fuel supply, transportation, and the wider economy, highlighting the complexities within the nation's fuel distribution network.
