The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued an impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct. This development follows a long-standing power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, fueling further political instability in the state.

The political crisis in Rivers State has escalated as the House of Assembly initiates impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct. The move, announced by Speaker Martin Amaewhule’s media aide, marks a significant shift in the state’s ongoing political battle.

Tensions between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have led to deep divisions within the state assembly. The crisis worsened after the Supreme Court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation from disbursing Rivers State’s monthly allocations, citing legal disputes. Additionally, the court annulled the local government elections held in October 2024, intensifying the political deadlock.

Fubara’s recent efforts to reconcile with lawmakers—including a proposed dialogue and a request to present the 2025 budget—were dismissed by the assembly, which accused him of violating due process. Shortly after, legislators adjourned indefinitely, raising concerns about governance in the state.

This is not the first attempt to remove Fubara from office. In 2023, an earlier impeachment effort triggered violent clashes, leading to the demolition of the assembly complex.
