PDP insists Tinubu lacks the authority to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The party warns of a plot to silence opposition and urges the National Assembly to resist the move.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, labeling President Bola Tinubu’s decision as unconstitutional and a threat to democracy. The party insists that Tinubu lacks the legal authority to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara and replace him with an unelected administrator.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, PDP spokesman Debo Ologunagba denounced the move as a “state capture” attempt, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating the crisis to tighten its grip on power. He argued that Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution does not grant Tinubu unilateral power to impose emergency rules without approval from the National Assembly.
PDP warned that the action sets a dangerous precedent that could weaken democratic institutions and silence opposition voices nationwide. The party urged lawmakers and civil society to resist what it described as an abuse of power, calling for an immediate reversal of the emergency rule.
Legal analysts and opposition leaders have also raised concerns over the constitutional implications of the declaration. Meanwhile, Rivers residents remain on edge as tensions continue to mount over the unfolding political crisis.
