In a dramatic twist, the 27 lawmakers from the Rivers State House of Assembly who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have made a U-turn, withdrawing the impeachment notice they had earlier issued against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Led by factional Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the lawmakers announced the withdrawal during their resumed sitting, citing resolutions from a truce meeting brokered by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Monday night.
The unexpected reversal, communicated in a letter signed by 24 lawmakers, was framed as a gesture of respect for the President. Despite this development, the state's Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, claimed the government was unaware of the matter.
The lawmakers pledged to adhere to the agreements reached during the truce meeting, emphasizing their commitment to constitutional duties. The Speaker expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his influential role in the resolution, emphasizing the House's focus on state development.
