Amid the Rivers State local government elections, the Commissioner of Police reportedly disregarded Governor Fubara's directives, allegedly following former Governor Wike’s orders instead. This conflict, highlighted by the Rivers Elders Forum, has intensified concerns over political stability, sparking debate on governance and authority within the state.
In a continuing dispute over political control in Rivers State, allegations have surfaced that the Commissioner of Police refused to follow Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s directives during the recent local government elections. Anabs Sara-Igbe, a member of the Rivers Elders Forum, has accused the police commissioner of taking orders from former Governor Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Sara-Igbe expressed concern over the situation, emphasizing that it is unacceptable for a state to have two power centers. He noted that Governor Fubara, despite the challenges, has remained calm. However, Sara-Igbe warned that the interference is destabilizing the region and suggested that the tension between Fubara and Wike could escalate if not addressed. He stressed that this kind of division is unprecedented in the state and raises questions about the rule of law.
The Rivers Elders Forum is urging for peace and stability, advocating that all parties respect the state’s constitutional authority to avoid further unrest in Rivers State.
