Prominent APC and PDP leaders, including Wike's supporters, protest against plans to demolish the Assembly quarters in Port Harcourt. Amid rising tensions, concerns over democratic integrity and governance emerge.
Prominent leaders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State staged a solidarity protest at the House of Assembly quarters in Port Harcourt, rejecting alleged plans by the state government to demolish the complex.
Led by figures like Desmond Akawor, Kingsley Chindah, and Olaka Nwogu, the protesters voiced their concerns to Speaker Hon. Martins Amaehwule, decrying Governor Siminalayi Fubara's purported intentions. Amaehwule assured them of the complex's structural integrity and emphasized its ownership by the Rivers State House of Assembly, warning against any unwarranted intervention by the governor.
The protest, fueled by worries over potential threats to democratic institutions, underscores the heightened political tensions gripping the region. As stakeholders engage in discussions to address the situation, the fate of the assembly complex hangs in the balance, reflecting broader concerns about governance and rule of law in Rivers State.
