In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced plans to conduct new local government elections following the October 2023 polls' invalidation. In a statewide address on Sunday, Fubara assured citizens his administration will comply with the court's decision after reviewing the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment, expected by March 7, 2025.
The Supreme Court ruled that the local elections held in October were invalid, prompting the governor to order immediate action. Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) are now tasked with overseeing the 23 local councils in the interim. The governor also instructed outgoing local government chairmen to hand over authority to the HLGAs by Monday, March 3.
Despite political challenges, Fubara urged citizens to remain calm, emphasizing his commitment to governance and constitutional principles. He reassured the people that the government would carry out the necessary steps in line with the law and the rule of law.
Fubara's speech also touched on other recent judicial developments, including the court's decision barring the Central Bank of Nigeria and other agencies from releasing funds to the state until certain legal issues are resolved. The governor reiterated his respect for the judiciary while confirming his resolve to act within constitutional bounds to move the state forward.
