Sallah on a Budget in Kano (1).webp
With Eid al-Adha days away, residents in Kano are grappling with a steep rise in food prices, particularly spices and vegetables, leaving many worried about celebrating the festival as usual.
  • A mudu of ginger now costs N32,000
  • Clove packs start from N200, with barely 10 pieces inside
  • Prices of vegetables have doubled in a week
  • Ram buyers now face extra costs on condiments
  • Vendors blame low supply, not Sallah profiteering
Kano residents heading to Rimi Market for Sallah prep are being hit hard. “A pack of spices I used to buy for N1,000 now comes in half the size,” lamented shopper Ibrahim Aminu. Like many others, he’s struggling with the combined cost of meat and condiments ahead of the June 6 Eid celebration.

Vegetable prices have also doubled. Hafsat Aliyu Buhari said she now needs N1,000, twice the usual amount, to buy the same quantity for her family’s stew.

Market sellers, however, insist this isn’t about exploiting the festive rush. “There’s just not enough produce coming in,” said Malam Adamu, a local vegetable vendor. Economist Dr Abdulnasir Yola explains it simply: demand has outpaced supply. During Eid, spices, vegetables, and oil are in higher demand. Inflation is doing the rest.

With just days to go, families are tightening their budgets. Celebrations will go on, but for many, they may be less elaborate than in years past.
