Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu addressed Banana Island residents on flood prevention, urging adherence to environmental laws and warning that buildings obstructing drainage channels may face demolition. This message followed the inauguration of new facilities by Banana Island’s property owners and residents association to enhance community life.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently addressed Banana Island residents, emphasizing the importance of adhering to state building and environmental regulations to mitigate persistent flooding. Speaking on Saturday at the inauguration of several community projects, including an administrative office, recreational park, and firefighting truck, Sanwo-Olu urged the Banana Island Property Owners and Residents Association (BIPORAL) to uphold maintenance standards for these new facilities, ensuring they benefit future generations.
The governor praised the association’s cooperation with state officials and acknowledged the outgoing leadership led by Frank Aigbogun, as well as the incoming executive headed by Abidemi Sonoiki. Residents voiced concerns about severe flooding, especially on the main access road, which frequently floods due to inadequate drainage systems.
Sanwo-Olu revealed that the Lagos Ministry of Environment would investigate the drainage issues, with the goal of implementing sustainable solutions. He noted that some structures had been built on water channels, obstructing natural drainage and worsening the flooding situation. Warning of potential demolitions, Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the government is prepared to act to restore proper drainage.
"I urge you to cooperate with us. Demolition is a last resort, but we must ensure water flows as intended to prevent flooding," Sanwo-Olu stated, adding that the Ministry of Environment and the Office of Drainage Services would take steps to assess and improve water flow.
