Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for what he described as an attempt to politicize calls for a transparent investigation into allegations leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Saraki dismissed Akpabio’s claim that the push for accountability was an effort to remove a Niger Delta leader from office. In a statement by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki emphasized that his call for due process was about protecting the credibility of the Senate, not political or regional interests.
He stressed that the investigation should be handled with transparency to ensure the Senate is not perceived as an institution that tolerates gender discrimination, abuse of power, or a culture of silence. Saraki argued that a fair and open inquiry would uphold public confidence in the legislature.
Akpabio’s remarks, made during a meeting with youth leaders, suggested that forces from Kwara and Adamawa were seeking his removal. Saraki, however, maintained that the matter should not be framed through ethnic or partisan lenses, calling on Akpabio to do what is right for the integrity of the institution.
He reiterated that handling the issue openly and fairly is essential, as allegations involving gender-based misconduct demand serious attention. Saraki urged the Senate leadership to avoid divisive rhetoric and instead focus on upholding justice and due process.
