A French interior designer, Anne, fell victim to a sophisticated romance scam, losing £700,000 after believing she was in a relationship with Hollywood star Brad Pitt. The scam began in September 2023 when Anne received a message claiming to be from "Jane Etta Pitt," allegedly Brad Pitt's mother. This led to daily interactions with someone impersonating the actor, complete with poems, AI-generated images, and claims of love.
The fraudster convinced Anne to fund "custom fees" and later fabricated a story about Brad Pitt suffering from kidney cancer, needing financial support after his accounts were frozen by ex-wife Angelina Jolie. Anne, vulnerable due to personal struggles, transferred approximately €830,000 (£697,000).
Her suspicions arose after seeing media coverage of Brad Pitt with his new partner, prompting her to report the scam to French authorities. Police launched an investigation in mid-2024. The ordeal left Anne hospitalized, battling severe depression.
