Tensions rise in Kano as heavily armed security forces surround the Emir’s Palace and Bichi Emirate due to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II's plan to appoint his Wamban Kano. This follows political moves by the state government, which invalidated five emirs, fueling further unrest in the region.
Tension has escalated in Kano as heavily armed security personnel, including police and operatives from the State Security Service (SSS), surrounded the Emir’s Palace at Kofar Kudu. The security presence comes amid efforts by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to install his newly appointed Wamban Kano, Munir Sanusi, to his district head role in Bichi.
Sources confirm that the Emir is expected to accompany Munir Sanusi to his official district posting, which has triggered the security mobilization. Additionally, the Bichi Emir’s Palace has also been placed under tight security with armed police officers stationed around the area.
The security action follows recent political developments in the state. Two weeks ago, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, visited Bichi, asserting the validity of the Bichi Emirate Council and reaffirming Emir Nasiru Ado Bayero’s position. In response, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, acting under the newly passed Kano Emirate Council Law, invalidated the roles of five emirs, including those of Bichi, removing them from their chiefdoms.
However, despite these changes, the government recently appointed three new second-class emirs, excluding Bichi, which led to the elevation of a district head instead. This complex political situation has heightened tensions in the region, with multiple security measures deployed to prevent further unrest.
