The Nigerian Senate has clarified that the N21 million monthly allocation mentioned by Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila is for running costs, not personal salaries or allowances. Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu emphasized that the funds are used for official purposes, including supporting constituency offices, and are separate from the senators' compensation.

The Nigerian Senate has recently responded to public confusion following Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila’s claims about the N21 million monthly allocation for each senator. In a BBC Hausa Service interview, Sumaila stated that this sum covered both salaries and allowances. He also mentioned that the amount includes running costs due to a recent increase.

Senator Yemi Adaramodu (Ekiti South), the Senate spokesman, has clarified that the N21 million is specifically allocated for running costs, not personal salaries or allowances. According to Adaramodu, the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) sets the monthly salary and allowances for each senator at N1,063,860. The running costs, he explained, are essential for the operational expenses of the Senate and other governmental bodies and are separate from legislators' compensation.

Adaramodu emphasized that these funds are strictly for official purposes, including support for staff in constituency offices, and require proof of genuine expenditure. He expressed frustration over the negative portrayal of Senate spending, asserting that the Nigerian Senate consists of dedicated professionals committed to enhancing the nation’s political and socio-economic development.

The clarification comes amid growing scrutiny and debate over public spending in Nigeria. Adaramodu’s statement aims to address concerns and provide transparency about how funds are utilized within the Senate.
