The Nigerian Senate has referred Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to the ethics committee over a dispute regarding her seat reassignment. Lawmakers insist on maintaining decorum, while Senate President Akpabio emphasizes adherence to parliamentary rules. The committee has two weeks to investigate and recommend possible disciplinary action.

The Nigerian Senate has referred Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions following a dispute over her assigned seat. The decision, made after a heated session, comes as lawmakers emphasize the importance of maintaining order and adherence to Senate regulations.

The controversy began on February 20 when Akpoti-Uduaghan objected to the reassignment of her seat at the start of plenary. Despite directives from Senate leadership, she refused to comply, sparking a tense exchange on the Senate floor.

Senator Yemi Adaramodu, speaking on the matter, criticized her actions, calling them disruptive and damaging to the Senate’s public image. He stressed that the chamber is meant for legislative duties, not personal disputes, and urged disciplinary measures against her.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also weighed in, stating that while every senator has their perspective on the issue, rules and procedures must be upheld. He dismissed suggestions that the dispute was gender-related, pointing out that other senators had previously adjusted to seating changes without conflict.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the Ethics Committee to investigate the incident and report back within two weeks. He reminded lawmakers that while senators can sit anywhere, their contributions must come from their assigned seats. He further noted that Senate rules prohibit disruptive behavior, warning that violations could lead to temporary suspension.

With the investigation now underway, all eyes are on the committee’s findings and any possible disciplinary action against Akpoti-Uduaghan.
