The reforms introduced, including tax bills and subsidy removals, are crucial for Nigeria's long-term economic growth.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stated that Nigeria was on “life support” when President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023. Akpabio made the remarks during his 2024 Constituency Briefing and Empowerment Programme at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, where he urged Nigerians to continue supporting Tinubu in his efforts to overcome the country's economic challenges.

He mentioned major reforms introduced by the president, including the implementation of tax bills, the removal of fuel subsidies, and the floating of the naira. These reforms, while painful, are deemed essential for long-term economic stability.

Recalling a conversation with Tinubu, Akpabio revealed that the president had been shocked by the state of the economy when he took office, calling it far worse than he had anticipated. Akpabio expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ability to steer the country toward growth, drawing parallels to the president's successful tenure in Lagos State.

While acknowledging the difficulty of the reforms, Akpabio emphasized their importance for Nigeria’s future prosperity. He encouraged beneficiaries of empowerment programs to use their tools to enhance their families’ livelihoods and avoid selling them. He also commended Governor Umo Eno for promoting peace and inclusivity in Akwa Ibom State, which he believes is crucial for development.
