Senate President Godswill Akpabio cautioned Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan during a Senate session, sparking controversy. The incident occurred when Akpabio called for votes on a bill's second reading, to which the 'Nay' response was loudest. As Akpabio considered his next step, Senator Natasha stood to explain why she and others opposed the bill.
"Mr. President, we don’t want it to be killed. We just want a bit of modification. We don’t want the bill killed but there should be slight modification," Natasha said.
In response, Akpabio remarked, "You see Senator Natasha, in the chamber, you have to be recognized before you speak. We’re not in a nightclub."
Natasha apologized and returned to her seat.
The exchange quickly drew reactions on social media, with many criticizing Akpabio's choice of words. Comments ranged from calling his language inappropriate for a parliamentary address to suggesting that he should be sued for making a derogatory statement. Critics labeled him as lacking integrity and respect, pointing out the offensive nature of comparing a Senate chamber to a nightclub.
Supporters of Akpabio noted that his statement could have been phrased better but argued that nightclubs are not exclusively frequented by women. Others highlighted the need for mutual respect among colleagues in the Senate, questioning how Akpabio would feel if he were addressed in a similarly dismissive manner.
