The Nigerian Senate has refused to probe sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, citing the absence of a formal petition. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of inappropriate advances, but he denied the claims. The controversy has sparked public debate, with calls for due process and transparency.

The Nigerian Senate has stated that it cannot launch an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, as there is no formal petition before the legislative body. The claims were made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), who accused Akpabio of inappropriate conduct during a visit to his residence.

Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, clarified the Senate’s stance during an interview on ARISE TV on Monday. He emphasized that the legislative chamber does not act based on media reports or social media discussions but follows due process through official petitions.

“There is presently no formal matter before the Senate regarding these allegations,” Adaramodu stated. “The only issue currently under review is Senator Natasha’s compliance with Senate rules.”

Senator Natasha had alleged that Akpabio made unwarranted advances toward her during a visit to his home in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in December 2023. She also claimed that the Senate President suggested her motions would receive favorable consideration if she acquiesced to his demands. However, Akpabio has denied the allegations, with his media consultant dismissing them as false. His wife, Ekaette Akpabio, also defended him, stating that the accusations were baseless.

The allegations come amid a separate controversy involving Natasha’s disciplinary review over a dispute with Akpabio regarding Senate seating arrangements. Adaramodu reiterated that all lawmakers must abide by Senate rules, particularly those concerning seating assignments.

Meanwhile, the issue has sparked intense debate on social media, with some users criticizing Natasha, accusing her of seeking public sympathy, while others argue that the claims warrant a thorough investigation.
