Elisha Abbo, the former senator from Adamawa North, claimed that Senate President Godswill Akpabio was involved in the Court of Appeal's decision to remove him from office. The Court of Appeal in Abuja invalidated Abbo's election as a senator for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In the February 25, 2023 parliamentary election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) initially declared Abbo the winner. However, his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Amos Yohanna, contested the result.
The tribunal dismissed Yohanna's petition, prompting him to approach the Court of Appeal. The court agreed with Yohanna's argument that there was no compliance with the Electoral Act, based on Section 137 of the Electoral Act, 2022. It ruled that Yohanna and the PDP had won the election by the majority of lawful votes.
In response, Abbo mentioned that he and four other senators who opposed Akpabio's rise to Senate President had been singled out for removal from the Senate through the courts. Abbo noted that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC Abia North) was the next target.
Abbo expressed his surprise at the court's judgment and emphasized the importance of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man. Despite the setback, he vowed to run again in 2027. Akpabio has not responded to these allegations at the time of this report.
