Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a left-wing pan-Africanist, was inaugurated as Senegal's youngest president after winning a landslide victory in the first round of elections, just 10 days post-release from prison.
The 44-year-old, with no prior elected experience, took the oath of office in the presence of several African leaders at the ceremony in Diamniadio. Promising to uphold the constitution and prioritize national unity, Faye outlined his commitment to African unity and sovereignty.
His presidency marks a significant departure from the previous administration, advocating for national reconciliation, economic reform, and anti-corruption measures. Faye, openly acknowledging his polygamous marriage, aims to reclaim control over key sectors like oil and gas, and steer Senegal away from the CFA franc.
Despite challenges, including the need for job creation in a youthful population, Faye's victory has garnered international support, signaling a new era for Senegal's political landscape.
