Nigerian musician Seun Kuti questions why footballers earn more than essential workers like doctors and nurses. During a recent livestream, Kuti emphasized that while essential workers risked their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic, footballers earned millions. He highlights the disparity in salaries between non-essential entertainment and vital healthcare roles.
Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has questioned the disparity in earnings between footballers and essential workers like doctors and nurses. During a recent Instagram livestream, Kuti highlighted that footballers, who were able to stop working during the COVID-19 pandemic, earn significantly more than essential workers, who continued to provide critical services despite risks.
Kuti expressed disbelief that athletes are paid millions to play a sport, while workers such as nurses, teachers, and paramedics earn far less for roles that are crucial to society. He emphasized that football is non-essential, noting that life continued during the pandemic without sports, whereas healthcare workers were indispensable.
He criticized the societal system that allows athletes to earn such enormous salaries while essential workers struggle financially. Kuti also suggested that even footballers themselves may realize the unjust nature of their pay compared to the invaluable services provided by frontline workers.
He concluded by stressing that essential workers, who faced tremendous challenges during the pandemic, deserve much more financial recognition for their contributions to society.
