Oyo Governor, Seyi Makinde, threatens to prosecute kingmakers who oppose the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as Alaafin over bribery allegations. The controversy stems from a feud with five of seven Oyomesi members who rejected Owoade's selection. Owoade’s coronation is scheduled in four weeks.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has vowed to take legal action against the kingmakers who continue to oppose the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo. Makinde’s statement came after he presented Owoade with the Certificate of Appointment and Staff of Office as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The governor emphasized the importance of the Alaafin's role not just for Oyo, but for the entire Yoruba race. He made it clear that any kingmakers protesting the appointment and found to have accepted bribes would face prosecution unless they publicly supported the new king.

Makinde also denied any political interference in the selection process, reiterating that the appointment was based on consultations and divination by the Oyomesi, the kingmakers. Despite this, five of the seven Oyomesi members rejected Owoade's selection, claiming that they had recommended Prince Luqman Gbadegesin instead. The disagreement has led to a feud between the kingmakers and the state government, especially following corruption allegations against them about previous selection processes.

Makinde has further announced that Owoade’s formal coronation will take place in four weeks, a step that aims to solidify his position as the new traditional ruler of Oyo.
