On December 25, 2024, a military airstrike targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group in Sokoto State tragically led to the deaths of 10 civilians in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities of Silame Local Government Area. In response, Vice President Kashim Shettima issued a heartfelt apology to the families of the victims, describing the incident as an unfortunate consequence of counter-terrorism operations.
The airstrike was part of the coordinated joint effort by the air and land components of Operation Fansan Yamma, aimed at eliminating terrorist groups in the region. Shettima acknowledged the difficulty in distinguishing between terrorists and civilians during such operations and expressed deep sympathy for those affected.
