President Bola Tinubu ordered the release of minors facing treason charges on compassionate grounds, Vice President Kashim Shettima announced. Despite evidence linking them to destructive protests, Tinubu's decision aims to rehabilitate the youths and reintegrate them into society, emphasizing national unity and responsible citizenship over punitive actions.
Vice President Kashim Shettima has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu directed the release of minors who faced treason charges, citing compassionate reasons for the decision. This announcement followed a meeting at the Presidential Villa, where Shettima received the minors after Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi officially dropped their charges.
Shettima emphasized that the youths' actions were captured in widely available video and photographic evidence, some of which they uploaded themselves. He lamented that the protests, which led to the arrests, had significant economic impacts, resulting in losses exceeding N300 billion, primarily affecting private businesses and public infrastructure.
According to Shettima, President Tinubu’s compassionate decision aligns with his role as a national leader willing to give these young Nigerians a second chance. He encouraged the youths to avoid future involvement in violent activities, urging them instead to contribute positively to society.
Shettima also called on governors and representatives across party lines to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of the minors, aiming to foster unity and rebuild community ties.
