South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol survived an impeachment motion on December 7, 2024, after members of his ruling People Power Party (PPP) staged a walkout in parliament. The opposition had filed the motion following Yoon’s controversial martial law declaration, which temporarily suspended civilian laws and led to military troops attempting to seize the National Assembly.

The PPP’s absence in the vote blocked the motion, as the opposition needed just eight more votes to secure the two-thirds majority required for approval. Despite the failed impeachment, public protests against Yoon’s leadership have continued, with his approval ratings significantly dropping.

Although he remains in office, his presidency is under intense scrutiny as South Koreans voice their discontent over his actions.
