Starlink is raising its Nigerian subscription fees to ₦75,000 monthly, effective January 27, 2025. The price increase comes ahead of an expected telecom tariff hike by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The move has faced criticism, as the new rates exceed Nigeria's minimum wage, affecting many users.

Starlink, the satellite internet provider, has announced a significant price hike for its Nigerian users, with the minimum subscription fee rising from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000 per month. The change will take effect on January 27, 2025. Additionally, the mobile global roaming service will cost ₦717,000.

This adjustment was communicated via email, where Starlink explained that the price increase is necessary to improve its network infrastructure and maintain high-quality service across Nigeria. Despite an earlier attempt in October to raise prices, which was rejected by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for lacking regulatory approval, Starlink has made a second attempt ahead of a possible tariff hike by the NCC. The tariff adjustment for Nigerian telecoms, including Starlink, is expected to be approved in the first quarter of 2025.

The price hike has sparked backlash among Nigerians, particularly those in the lower and middle-income brackets, as the new rates now surpass the country’s minimum wage. Users who have benefited from Starlink’s premium services may be forced to seek more affordable alternatives, potentially losing customers for Starlink. This increase comes when many Nigerians are already grappling with economic challenges, making the adjustment a contentious issue within the country's internet service landscape.
