Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chair of NiDCOM, urged Nigerians to stop migrating illegally to countries worse than Nigeria, warning of the dangers involved. She reacted to a viral video of Nigerians in a Mali prison, stressing the importance of obeying foreign laws and avoiding irregular migration.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chair of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has called on Nigerians to stop fleeing to countries that are worse than Nigeria, emphasizing the dangers of illegal migration. In a video shared on social media platform X, she urged influencers and bloggers to help spread the message that many Nigerians are escaping to countries where conditions are even more challenging.
She highlighted a recent viral video showing Nigerian women in a Mali prison pleading for help. According to Dabiri-Erewa, many of these women had previously been rescued by the Nigerian government but shockingly found themselves back in Mali after their return.
Addressing the situation, she stressed the importance of following the laws of other countries, warning that illegal migration often leads to severe consequences. She also emphasized the efforts of the Nigerian mission in Mali to bring those affected back home but noted that irregular migration remains a dangerous and complex issue.
Dabiri-Erewa’s message is part of a broader government effort to curb illegal migration and raise awareness about its risks. Her plea highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerians abroad and the importance of making informed decisions when considering migration options.
