Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cautioned against uninformed public commentary on Senate proceedings, urging critics to familiarize themselves with legislative rules before making statements. Speaking during a meeting with the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum in Abuja, Akpabio defended the Senate’s recent decisions, particularly the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Addressing growing scrutiny, Akpabio criticized social media and television analysts for allegedly misrepresenting Senate procedures. “Many who comment on legislative matters lack the necessary knowledge. It’s akin to a herbalist trying to quote the Bible or someone unfamiliar with Islamic teachings interpreting the Qur’an,” he remarked.
His comments follow widespread debate over Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension after she accused Akpabio of misconduct. While some view the move as a political maneuver, Akpabio insisted that Senate decisions are collectively made and rooted in parliamentary rules.
The visiting delegation, led by Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, expressed concerns over political instability in Rivers State and urged Senate intervention in key Niger Delta development projects. Akpabio assured them of Senate support, reaffirming the region’s critical role in national stability.
The meeting underscored continued political tensions but also reinforced Akpabio’s influence and the Senate’s role in shaping national discourse.
