The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has likened social media to a terrorist organisation, citing its role in spreading falsehoods and inciting unrest. His comments, made during a summit in Maiduguri, have sparked debate about digital regulation, misinformation, and free speech in Nigeria.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has described social media as a “terrorist organisation,” warning of its growing role in spreading false information and inciting violence across the country.
Speaking at the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council in Maiduguri, Borno State, the revered monarch expressed deep concern over how easily misinformation circulates online and its damaging impact on national unity.
“Social media is one terrorist organisation,” the Sultan said. “Someone can sit at home, fabricate stories, and people believe them without verification. It’s a dangerous tool that must be dealt with seriously.”
He called on security agencies to treat social media platforms with the same level of seriousness as other threats to national security. According to him, unchecked online narratives have fueled tensions and deepened divisions in Nigeria.
The Sultan also condemned the ongoing violence in Plateau and other troubled regions, urging government officials and law enforcement to act swiftly and decisively.
His comments have ignited widespread discussion online, with some citizens expressing concern that the comparison could be used to justify future censorship, while others agree more regulation is necessary to curb misinformation.
