The Super Eagles of Nigeria emerged victorious against Cote d'Ivoire, and Assistant Coach Finidi George attributes the success to a strategic formation switch. The match, held on Thursday, January 18, at the Alassane Outtara Stadium in Abidjan, saw Captain Troost-Ekong netting a crucial penalty kick after VAR intervention confirmed a foul on Victor Osimhen by Ousmane Diomande.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria after the game, Finidi George shared insights into the tactical decisions that shaped the team's performance. He emphasized the importance of the players adhering to instructions in a highly tactical game against the formidable hosts.
"We are very happy with the victory, but nothing has been done yet. It was a tactical game; we switched formation and had to defend most of the time and use counter-attacks from the flanks," explained Finidi. Recognizing Cote d'Ivoire's prowess on the ball, the coaching staff opted to sit back, close spaces, and exploit counter-attack opportunities.
Despite the triumph, Finidi cautioned against complacency, stating, "We will keep our cool in the next match because nothing has been achieved yet; we go all out again." The Super Eagles are set to face Guinea-Bissau in their third and final Group A match on Monday at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan.
Currently, occupying the second spot in Group A, the Super Eagles maintain focus on advancing further in the tournament. The upcoming match against Guinea-Bissau will serve as a crucial test of their strategic adaptability and determination to secure a prominent position in the AFCON standings.
