The Supreme Court has reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as PDP National Secretary, overturning lower court rulings. The apex court ruled that the matter is an internal party affair and not justiciable. It also held that the plaintiff lacked legal standing, solidifying Anyanwu’s leadership within the party.

The Supreme Court has overturned previous rulings by the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court, reinstating Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). The apex court ruled that the matter was an internal party affair and not justiciable.

Justice Jamilu Tukur, delivering the unanimous judgment, nullified the trial court’s ruling from October 2024 and the appellate court’s decision from December. Instead, the Supreme Court upheld the minority judgment from Justice Ekanem, which argued that the lower court lacked jurisdiction. The court also ruled that the plaintiff, Aniagu Emmanuel, had no legal standing to challenge Anyanwu’s reinstatement. Anyanwu, who resigned to contest the 2024 Imo State governorship election, sought to return as PDP National Secretary after his electoral loss.

Legal representatives of the PDP did not actively oppose Anyanwu’s appeal, while opposition figures argued that his resignation disqualified him from reclaiming the role. The Supreme Court’s verdict now solidifies his leadership within the party.
