A suspected internet fraudster has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly killing one of its operatives during an arrest operation in Anambra State. The suspect reportedly opened fire on EFCC officials on Friday, resulting in the death of one officer and severe injuries to another.
The deceased operative was laid to rest in Sokoto on Saturday, while the suspect was taken into custody at the EFCC’s Enugu zonal headquarters. An EFCC official described the incident as a tragic escalation of challenges posed by internet fraud.
Confirming the attack, Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson in Anambra, said officers responded to a distress call in Ifite, where the suspect was apprehended. A pump-action gun used in the attack was also recovered from the scene.
Ikenga explained that the suspect attacked EFCC operatives during their investigation, leading to the fatality and injury. He assured the public that an investigation is underway, promising updates as the case progresses.
Efforts to reach Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s spokesperson, for further comments were unsuccessful. This tragic event underscores the increasing risks faced by law enforcement in combating cybercrime in Nigeria.
