Swiss footballer Silvan Wallner, a former champion with FC Zurich, has left professional football at the age of 22 to honor his religious convictions. Despite recently joining Austrian Bundesliga team Blau-Weiss Linz on a two-year contract, Wallner decided to end his career to observe Saturday as his day of rest, aligning with his faith as a devout Christian and follower of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which regards Saturday as the Sabbath.
Wallner, who has represented Switzerland in youth international competitions, expressed his commitment to prioritizing his faith over football. He shared that his decision reflects his deepened belief and desire to follow Jesus Christ, emphasizing that his choice was personal and based on careful reflection.
In parting, Wallner thanked the officials, staff, and teammates at Blau-Weiss Linz, as well as others who supported him throughout his career, which included 49 appearances for FC Zurich in the Swiss Super League. Wallner’s decision highlights the challenges athletes may face when balancing professional commitments with personal convictions.
