A gas tanker explosion on Otedola Bridge set multiple vehicles, a church, and a house ablaze Tuesday night. Emergency responders are working to contain the fire, with no casualties reported so far. Authorities have diverted traffic to ease congestion, following an earlier accident on the bridge.

A gas tanker explosion on Tuesday night sent fireballs across the Otedola Bridge area, destroying multiple vehicles, a church, and residential structures. The incident, which occurred around 8 p.m., involved a 30-tonne DAF truck that overturned while negotiating a bend near Omole, spilling its highly flammable contents.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames engulf a nearby mechanic village, where several cars were parked, as well as a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and a bungalow. Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire Service, police, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), swiftly arrived at the scene to contain the inferno and prevent further damage.

The fire service confirmed that, as of the time of reporting, no casualties had been recorded. Authorities also cordoned off the expressway, diverting traffic to alternative routes to avoid further escalation of the crisis. LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, assured the public that all efforts were being made to fully extinguish the fire.

This explosion comes just hours after another accident on the bridge earlier in the day caused a severe traffic jam on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, adding to the growing concerns over road safety and tanker operations in the state. Officials have urged motorists to exercise caution and expect delays as emergency teams continue their work at the scene.
