Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, says the proposed electricity tariff hike will boost available power generation to 7,000MW. He highlights recent milestones, including a record 5,801.84MW peak evacuation, and emphasizes tariff reforms to enhance sector liquidity, reduce subsidies, and ensure a stable, efficient power supply nationwide.

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has revealed that the proposed electricity tariff increase will push available power generation capacity to 7,000MW. Speaking through his spokesperson, Adelabu emphasized that tariff reforms are essential for stabilizing the power sector and bridging financial shortfalls.

The minister highlighted the sector’s recent milestones, including a record evacuation of 5,801.84MW and an all-time high daily energy output of 128,370.75MWh. According to Adelabu, these achievements stem from ongoing infrastructure upgrades and policy reforms aimed at improving reliability.

To sustain progress, the government plans to address a N1.94 trillion tariff shortfall for 2024 and clear legacy debts owed to power generation companies. Adelabu stressed that increasing tariffs for Bands B, C, and D will help reduce the government’s subsidy burden and improve sector liquidity.

He further urged stakeholders—including state governments and private investors—to collaborate in ensuring that recent power sector gains are maintained and expanded.
