Tensions rise in Okuama, Delta State, following the death of community leader Dennis Okugbaye in military custody, just days after the death of President-General Pa James Oghoroko. The deaths have sparked protests, with residents demanding the release of detained leaders and the return of Oghoroko’s body.

According to SaharaReporters, another community leader from Okuama, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, has tragically passed away while in military detention. The 81-year-old, who served as the community’s treasurer, died on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. His death follows the recent passing of Pa James Oghoroko, the community’s President-General, who also died in military custody under similar circumstances.

Okugbaye, along with other community leaders, was detained by the military in August 2024 after 17 soldiers were killed during a peace mission involving Okuama and the neighboring Okoloba community. The detained leaders, who also included Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo and Chief Belvis Adogbo, were held without trial, escalating tensions in the area.

Pastor Akpos Okugbaye, the son of the deceased, confirmed his father’s passing. Prior to his death, the Okugbaye family had sent over N401,000 to assist with his medical care. Concerns had been raised about his health in the days leading up to his death, particularly following Pa Oghoroko’s death in detention.

A medical report from the military, dated December 6, 2024, revealed that Okugbaye’s health was severely deteriorating. His passing has intensified protests in the community, with residents demanding the release of all detained leaders and the return of Pa Oghoroko's body. If their demands are not met, further demonstrations are expected.
