Ijaw women in Rivers State blocked a major road to protest against Nyesom Wike’s visit, citing his controversial remark about their ethnic group. The protest highlights ongoing political tensions between Wike and Governor Fubara. The Ijaw National Congress has called on President Tinubu to intervene and address the issue.

In Rivers State, a group of Ijaw women staged a protest, blocking a key road in Asari Toru Local Government Area to prevent the arrival of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The demonstration was fueled by Wike’s recent remarks referring to the Ijaw people as a “minority of minorities” in the South-South, except in Bayelsa.

The protest highlights ongoing political tensions between Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who have been engaged in a power struggle over the state’s political control. Protesters held banners and chanted against Wike, insisting that his comments were disrespectful and divisive.

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has since called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, urging Wike to focus on his ministerial role rather than making inflammatory statements. INC leaders emphasized their commitment to peace but warned against actions that could further alienate the Ijaw community.

Security personnel were deployed to monitor the protest, though no violence was reported. With political tensions in Rivers State escalating, many await Wike’s response and whether further demonstrations will follow.
