In a challenging Champions League opener, Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen expressed disappointment following the team's 2-1 defeat to Monaco, particularly after Eric García's red card in the 11th minute. Speaking to Movistar+ after the match, Ter Stegen reflected on the impact of the early dismissal, stating, “We didn’t understand each other well (with Eric) in that situation. I feel bad for him because it puts him in a tough spot.”
Playing with ten men for the majority of the match, Ter Stegen noted that the team tried to secure at least a point in the second half but ultimately struggled against a Monaco side that capitalized on their numerical advantage. He described Monaco’s second goal as “undeserved,” occurring from a long ball that caught the defense off guard.
Despite the setback, Ter Stegen remained optimistic, emphasizing the importance of focusing on their upcoming home match. “After the break, we knew they were going to push harder because they had one more player than us. We wanted to close the spaces well, and to some extent, it worked quite well,” he said. Barcelona will need to regroup and adjust as they prepare for their next fixture in hopes of bouncing back from this disappointing start to their European campaign.
