The Nigerian military has provided an update on the recent clash between soldiers and terrorists in Borno State. On January 4, 2025, a large group of ISWAP/Boko Haram terrorists attacked a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Sabon Gari, Damboa LGA. The terrorists aimed to retaliate for the killing of their commander and several combatants by Nigerian troops. However, the troops successfully foiled the attack, with timely reinforcements from the Civilian Joint Task Force and vigilante groups arriving to overpower the terrorists.

During the encounter, 34 terrorists were neutralized, and 23 AK-47 rifles, along with over 200 rounds of ammunition, were recovered. Despite this victory, the military confirmed the loss of six soldiers in action. Additionally, the Vigilante Commander was injured by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), but the reinforcements helped secure the situation. The air component of Operation HADIN KAI also played a critical role, conducting air interdiction on the fleeing terrorists.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major-General Edward Buba, expressed gratitude for the swift response of the reinforcement team and the airstrikes that contributed to the success. He also appealed to the media and the public to respect the confidentiality of the names of the fallen soldiers until their next of kin are notified.
