NERC has blamed the latest national grid collapse, the third in a week, on a transformer explosion at the Jebba Transmission Station. The incident triggered a nationwide blackout, and efforts to restore power are ongoing. NERC plans to conduct a public hearing to address recurring grid failures.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has attributed the latest national grid collapse to an explosion at the Jebba Transmission Station. This incident, which occurred on Saturday, marked the third collapse in just one week. According to NERC, the transformer explosion at 8:15 AM led to a cascade of power plants shutting down, resulting in a nationwide blackout.
Efforts to restore power have since made progress, with supply reinstated in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by 1 PM. NERC expressed concerns over the increasing frequency of grid collapses, noting that these incidents are undoing progress in reducing infrastructure gaps and improving grid stability.
To address the issue, NERC announced plans for an investigative public hearing aimed at uncovering the root causes of these recurring grid failures. The commission is committed to ensuring improved grid management and making the necessary investments to prevent future collapses.
The date and venue for the public hearing will be announced soon, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate.
