The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mrs. Olukorede Keisha, announced that a comprehensive overhaul of the Third Mainland Bridge's asphalt layers will begin in late January 2024. This repair work is long overdue as no significant maintenance has been conducted on the bridge for the past 30 years. It involves replacing the worn-out asphalt overlay on both carriageways, which is expected to provide relief for the next decade.
The bridge will be closed for a total of six months to facilitate these essential repairs. However, the repair process will commence with palliative works to alleviate the strain on motorists, starting with one carriageway. After three months, the work will shift to the other side, allowing traffic to resume on the first side.
The entire repair operation is contract-awarded by the Federal government and depends on the availability of funds for successful execution. This decision to overhaul the bridge is aimed at addressing the long-standing maintenance issues and providing a lasting solution for commuters.
This news follows the announcement of a 24-hour bridge closure for immediate palliative works, as part of the government's plan to address the urgent repair needs of the Third Mainland Bridge. The new administration is focused on shifting from sectional repairs to comprehensive overhauls, ensuring longer-lasting road infrastructure across the country
