President Bola Tinubu has appointed former INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, as Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms. His role aligns with Tinubu’s efforts to resolve the farmers-herders crisis through structured reforms. Jega will help implement policies aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s livestock sector and improving agricultural stability.
President Bola Tinubu has appointed former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, as the Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms. The announcement was made on Friday by Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, through his verified X account.
Jega, who served as INEC chairman from 2010 to 2015, will now play a key role in implementing Nigeria’s livestock development policies. The appointment aligns with Tinubu’s efforts to tackle the longstanding farmers-herders crisis, a source of conflict in many parts of the country.
In July 2024, Tinubu established the Ministry of Livestock Development to address agricultural challenges and improve relations between farmers and herders. The ministry was created based on recommendations from the National Livestock Reforms Committee, which aims to modernize livestock farming, enhance food security, and reduce violent clashes.
Jega’s appointment has sparked discussions among analysts, with some commending his leadership experience, while others question his background in electoral management rather than agriculture. However, the president believes that his expertise in governance and policy implementation will be valuable in coordinating nationwide livestock reforms.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic and security concerns, Tinubu’s administration is betting on structured reforms to stabilize rural communities and improve food production. Jega’s role will be crucial in shaping policies that could transform Nigeria’s livestock sector and reduce tensions in agricultural regions.
